Reg Wins Local Hero Award in the Sunday Mail Scottish Sports Awards 09
The club is immensely proud and pleased that this week Reg was voted Local Hero in this year's Sunday Mail Scottish Sports Awards. In a middle page spread about the awards the Sunday Mail said:
LOCAL HERO - REG ADAMS
Reg has dedicated 50 years of his life to Scottish swimming and his 80th year marks his retiral from coaching duties due to his wife's ill health.
Members of Grangemouth Amateur Swimming Club came to regard Reg as part of the furniture after a lifetime of volunteering his expertise at least three nights a week.
Over the years, the Grangemouth man has counted Scottish champions and record holders among his pupils. Reg said: "I'm thrilled to receive this but I feel a bit embarrassed too - it should actually have gone to the kids as they are the ones who do all the hard work.
"This is the perfect way to round off my career and will hopefully encourage the swimmers to keep going."
Presenting the award, Olympic legend Brendan Foster said: "This was the most difficult award to decide, but Reg was the clear winner."
Warm and heartfelt congratulations go to Reg from all his friends at the club. The award is a fitting tribute to his coaching career.
The awards are televised on Sunday 6th December at 9pm. Full Sunday Mail report. Below are some further details on plans for Reg's retirement.
Making arrangements for Reg's retirement - and a song
Card: We have a good luck card for everyone to sign which will be at the desk on a Tuesday night. If anyone wants to contribute to a retirement gift you can add your donation to the jar!
Leaving DVD: We plan to get together a little DVD to give to Reg with well wishes from anyone who would like to leave a few words. You can talk, sing, wave, cry........ do whatever you want. If anyone you know was coached by Reg in the past, or associated with the club and Reg, that you think would like to say a few words please pass this on.
Filming will take place on Tuesday 1st December in the back cafe from 6pm to 8pm, and again on Sunday 6th December from 5pm to 7pm. Would be lovely to see a load of people there!
Leaving Lunch: We are looking to organise a little leaving lunch for Reg in January ....... more details to follow
Song for Club Championship night: We have a little song for everyone to learn for Club Championship night! It was written by Julie Nimmo, Hannah Busby and Linda Nimmo (don't let the 2 girls tell you otherwise!). We plan to have a little song for Reg on the night of the club championship and presentation night so get practicing.
