Grangemouth Amateur Swimming Club coaches swimmers through a training squad structure that caters for participants of different ages and abilities.

The main training groups are Probationers, Improvers, C Squad, B Squad, B+ Squad and I Squad.

Probationers and Improvers undergo a considerable amount of work involving technique, body position and breathing etc. This should allow swimmers to progress smoothly to C and then B Squads where the emphasis will be building fitness and race practice.

Swimmers who are talented then progress through B+ to  I Squad, which has swimmers able to complete at the highest levels.

Movement from squad to squad (and from lane to lane in Improvers) is at the discretion of the coaches, who assess the swimmers regularly. There are many factors to be taken into consideration, too many to list here. It is not always the fastest who are promoted. Some swimmers rise quickly through the squads, some do not. This is not always a reflection on the eventual ability of the swimmer. It is worth noting that some of the best swimmers in the club have started slowly.

X Squad is for swimmers who used to swim with one of the upper squads but due to other commitments (often because of exams) cannot train as regularly. They may attend other swim training sessions by agreement of the relevant coach.
